Splints

Are hyperactive jaw muscles to blame for your head, neck or jaw ache?

If you’ve been suffering from head, neck or jaw ache recently, you’ve probably put it down to stress at work, or sleeping in an awkward position. However, did you know that these are all symptoms of hyperactive jaw muscles?

You’re probably thinking that you’d realise if your jaw was ‘hyperactive,’ but grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw typically occurs when you’re sleeping and not consciously in control of it. The outcome can result in a misaligned bite which in turn can cause a number of problems such as:

Permanent toothache
Headaches (usually after waking up)
Sinus pain
Jaw ache, or difficulty opening and closing your jaw
Pain in your neck and shoulders
Ringing or buzzing in your ears
Teeth becoming loose, worn down or flattened
Teeth, fillings or crowns cracking or breaking

If you are suffering one or more of the symptoms above, you are strongly recommended to come and see Dr Mulgund. He will begin by conducting an extensive examination of your teeth, gums and jaw to identify whether or not clenching or grinding is the source of your discomfort.

Depending on the severity of your condition, Dr Mulgund will discuss your treatment options with you. For example you may simply require some form of splint (similar to a mouth guard) to prevent the teeth from rubbing together, or equilibration whereby some of the tooth area is filed away so that the teeth fit together more comfortably.

Dr Mulgund is always extremely thorough when it comes to diagnosing and treating problems associated with grinding teeth or clenching the jaw. He will analyse your symptoms and only ever recommend the treatment he feels is best suited to your needs. No matter what you require, you can rest assured he will do whatever it takes to find the right solution for your problem.

Our promise to you

At Densmile Dental Care we guarantee all of our patients that they will experience no pain during their procedures. As well as administering numbing gel before any injections, Dr Mulgund asks all patients to raise their hand if they are experiencing any discomfort at any point. He will then stop what he is doing and won’t start again until you are completely happy. Where necessary, he will provide additional local anaesthetic. However, if you are still experiencing discomfort after all endeavours, the treatment can be suspended and re-arranged if needs be.
